Preparing for a Job Fair
Before the Job Fair
-
Prepare a resume
for the job fair. Have at least two other people proofread it for
grammar and spelling errors and make sure all the information is
current.
-
Research the list
of companies that will be attending the job fair. Check their
web-sites, read news reports and press releases, and find out if
they have openings that fit your skills and experience. Prepare a
few questions for each business that has job openings you are
interested in, or you think you might like to work for.
-
Develop a
strategy for the fair. What do you want to get out of the job fair?
Do you want to learn about different companies, or apply for a
specific job, or both? Prioritize the
employers with whom you'd like to speak and prepare a list of
questions for those employers.
-
Prepare a 30
second commercial about "you" which focuses on your experience, skills, and
achievements. Practice it well. Be ready to discuss how your
previous experience relates to a particular employer's needs.
Interview space is available to employers wishing to conduct
interviews the day of the fair, so be prepared.
At the Job Fair
-
Personal
appearance and neatness is very important.
-
Carry a simple
folder or portfolio to keep your resume organized and ready to hand
to employers. Have a pen and note book to take notes.
-
Bring plenty of
copies of your resume to give to prospective employers. Some
employers may not accept resumes due to federal regulations on how
employers keep data on their applicants. They may refer you to their
web site to apply on line. Greet employers with a firm handshake and
maintain eye contact throughout the conversation.
-
Take time to talk
to the employers; don’t just drop off your resume. Job fairs are
busy places so remember to be patient when waiting to talk to an
employer. Do not monopolize
the recruiter's time but use your 30 second commercial and ask a few
questions about their company. Collect the employer’s literature and
business cards for follow up and correspondence.
After the Job Fair
-
Review and
organize the information and the business cards you have collected.
-
Follow-up: send
a thank you note to each recruiter you visited at the job fair.
Don’t miss
this opportunity to find the right job for you.
